Two Members of Department of Mathematics selected into the 2017 Thousand Talents Program

Congratulations to Professors Jiang Yang and Alexander Kurganov for being selected into prestigious national talent programs for year 2017! Professor Yang was selected into the 1000 Talents Program for Young Professionals sponsored by the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee, and Professor Kurganov was selected into the 1000 Talents Program for Foreign Experts (long-term) sponsored by the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs of China.

Professor Yang obtained his Ph.D. degree in 2014 from Hong Kong Baptist University. From 2014 to 2015 and from 2015 to 2017, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Pennsylvania State University and Columbia University, USA, respectively. He joined the Department of Mathematics of Southern University of Science and Technology in July 2017. His current research field is the numerical solution of differential equations. His main research interests include the numerical solutions of phase field models and non-local models, and their applications.

Professor Kurganov received his master's degree from Moscow University. He graduated from Tel Aviv University in Israel with a Ph.D. degree in 1998. Before joining our department, he was a professor at Tulane University, USA. His research area is the numerical solution of partial differential equations. The central-upwind scheme he developed has been widely used; his work on the shallow water equations helps to understand several important geophysical phenomena. Recently, he has also done a lot of work in the numerical analysis of chemotaxis models.

The department is now home of nine recipients of prestigious national talents programs with four colleagues in the 1000 Talents Program, two in the 1000 Talents Program for Foreign Experts, and three in the 1000 Talents Program for Young Professionals.
